CHECKERS VARIATIONS
As the game of checkers is very old, it is bound to have many variations. Some of the variations in the game occurred because the game evolved over a period of time while the variations are there because of the place that has adopted the game. Various places have created their own rules and regulations for the game of checkers. For example, the version that is played in France, Belgium, Netherlands, and some African countries allows the red or the white pieces to make the first move. This variation of the game is known as the Polish Draughts.
Another variation of the game, known as the English draughts, has 12 pieces on both the sides but the Kings are allowed to move only in the forward direction. There is no backward movement. The Russian version of the game has similar rules as the American game and the Kings as well as the other pieces are allowed to make moves in forward as well as the backward movement. This makes the game more interesting as there are more movements.
The Canadian version of the game has a lot of variation from the usual American version. This variation of the game is typically played on a board of 12 by 12 rather than the 8 by 8. It has 30 pieces on each side as against the 12 pieces in American and most other variations. The Spanish version of the game, both the King piece as well as the regular pieces is allowed to make movements in both directions. But if both the pieces are able to jump, preference is given to the King.
