RISK STRATEGY
Although not very complicated as a game, it is important to know basic strategy in order to be a winner in Risk. It is one of the original board games that introduced players to the genre of war games. While the roll of the dice can literally decide your fate, strategy, intelligence and tactical decisions are of prime importance. It is important to remember that Risk is not a team game. If you do happen to make alliances to conquer distant lands, they are by far temporary.
With plenty of variations and editions available, it is important to first be aware of the rules of that particular Risk board game that you are playing. The basic strategy is to have the largest number of armies in the most beneficial of positions. And of the easiest ways to gain armies is to hold continents.
To begin with Australia and South America are good continents to control. While the former has only one point of attack from the outside, the latter has two. Ensure that when you control a continent, your armies are positioned such that they protect the points of attack to make you less vulnerable. Also, if you decide to conquer an entire continent, make sure that you can hold it for at least a full turn, as it can make you a soft target for attack. Always attack with a large and strong army instead of a medium-sized army. In your ensuing battle to own more continents, ensure that you don’t weaken your position or spread yourself too thin.
If you are playing with mission cards, first conquer the continent, and then once you have the armies in position, go after your mission. But make sure that you don’t give away all your secrets, as that will leave you open to attack.
If you are playing with increasing card redemption values, try to hold on to them as far as possible, especially in the beginning of the game. Wild cards should be held on to as long as possible throughout the game.
If you have the option of multiple dice rolling while defending a country, take maximum advantage of that chance. Higher rolling of the dice increases the opportunity for a successful defense.
